Natural Home Remedy for Kids’ Cough: Garlic and Honey Infusion That Works

Cough in children is one of the most common discomforts parents deal with, especially during cold or allergy seasons. While medications can help, many parents prefer gentle, natural remedies that soothe without harsh side effects. One age-old and effective home remedy is garlic and honey infusion a simple mixture that can help ease coughing, boost immunity, and fight infections naturally.

Why Garlic and Honey?

Both garlic and honey have powerful medicinal properties that make them perfect for soothing a child’s cough:

  • Garlic contains allicin, a compound with antibacterial, antiviral, and anti-inflammatory properties. It helps fight off infections that cause coughs and colds.

  • Honey is naturally soothing and coats the throat, reducing irritation and suppressing coughing. It also acts as a mild antibacterial agent.

How to Prepare Garlic and Honey Infusion

Ingredients:

  • 3–4 fresh garlic cloves

  • ½ cup of natural raw honey (avoid processed or flavored honey)

Instructions:

  1. Peel and slightly crush the garlic cloves to release their natural oils.

  2. Place the crushed garlic in a clean glass jar.

  3. Pour the honey over the garlic until fully covered.

  4. Cover the jar tightly and let it sit for 8–12 hours (overnight) at room temperature.

  5. The next morning, strain out the garlic (optional) or leave it in if your child doesn’t mind the flavor.

Store the mixture in a cool, dry place or refrigerate. It can last for up to a week.

How to Use It for Children

  • Give ½ teaspoon for children aged 1 to 5 years,

  • Or 1 teaspoon for children above 6 years.

  • Administer it 2–3 times daily (morning, afternoon, and before bed).

Important Note:

Do not give honey to babies under 1 year old due to the risk of infant botulism.

  • Always consult a pediatrician if your child’s cough persists beyond a few days or is accompanied by fever or breathing difficulty.
